Italian passports are trackable

Its true and verified, what Adam Laurie has discovered: Italian E-passports are trackable. The RFID-chip on them emits a ID which is unique to the passport. E-Passports from other countires have random IDs, they change on every read. The uniqueness of the ID has at least two severe consequences:
  • The passport is trackable. If someone has the ID of your passport, it can be identified undetectedly by any suitable RFID-Reader. If enough of them are placed strategically, your movement can be tracked if you carry your passport. Think of business meetings, shops, bars, nights clubs, politcal demonstrations, etc.
  • Passport security is broken. The data stored on the chip is encrypted. To gain access to them you need the string in the machine readable zone printed of the passport. You need physical access to the document. You give it to the officer at the border, place it on a scanner etc. BUT if someone has a database of all the passports along with the IDs of the RFID chips, reading the data from the passport is no longer needed. This applies to the issuer of the passport (the italian government) AND to all the entities that once had physical access to passport.
The third consequence is a just hypothesis. What if the issuer managed to encode the key, that is normally derived from the code printed on the passport, in the unique ID transmitted by the chip? In this case the passport would be undetectedly readable by anyone, that knows that encoding scheme...

Moving..

After moving to a new appartment in Tübingen I'm moving my website to a new server. Some services might not work until the migration is complete. Sorry for that.

Passaporto elettronico or track-an-italian

According to rfidiot.org Italian electronic passports do not have random UIDs. This means that every passport emits a unique number that makes you trackable and identifies you as an Italian.
Just to explain why this is dangerous: its possible that the issuer (the state) has a database of the UIDs linked to the individuals. So you could be identified without noticing. This wouldn't be possible if the number was random, as it should be, because the data on the passport is encrypted.
I will try to verify this when I get my passport...
